Outdoor Research Carbide vs Norrøna lofoten GORE-TEX Pro: women’s ski shells compared
Choose the women’s Carbide if its helmet-compatible Halo hood, two-way front zip and ski storage suit you. Choose lofoten GORE-TEX Pro if you want front ventilation, hand gaiters and a removable powder skirt. Both are ski shells with underarm ventilation and pass-pocket storage.
Based on 193 included owner reviews. Owner evidence spans multiple revisions; current specifications do not describe every reviewed jacket.
The differences that matter
Carbide uses three-layer Pertex Shield with a 40-denier nylon face and tricot backer. The current lofoten uses GORE-TEX PRO ePE with a 70-by-160-denier face. That is a construction difference, not proof of a controlled durability or breathability advantage. The lofoten owner group spans revisions, so it does not exclusively test the current ePE version.
The ventilation and storage layout is the more practical comparison. Lofoten lists front ventilation in addition to underarm vents, plus internal zipped and mesh storage. Carbide lists two outer chest pockets, an internal chest pocket and a forearm pass pocket. We have a 507 g Carbide specification but no comparable verified lofoten jacket weight here.

Which should you choose?
Choose Carbide if its hood and two-way front opening work well with your helmet and ski layers. Choose lofoten when its front vents, hand gaiters and removable skirt are features you will use. Test pocket access with gloves on and fit over your insulation. These shells provide weather cover; the warmth of the layers underneath remains a separate decision.
